MobileRecycle in the news30 January 2006 Did you get a new mobile this Christmas? Not sure what to do with your old phone? Help is now at hand thanks to a new recycling initiative launched by a young Scarborough entrepreneur. Recycle IT is the brainchild of Terry Bigsby who, with the aid of Business Link services accessed through local provider North Yorkshire Moors and Coast business advice agency (NYMAC), set up a mobile phone recycling business in September 2005 to encourage people in Scarborough to put them to better use. The new company is encouraging people to hand in their unwanted phones at the drop off point at Hanover Street, or at any of the recycle bins in Scarborough. From there the phones are either reconditioned or sent to the manufacturer for the components to be recycled. Recycle IT is currently working with Scarborough organisations, charities and schools to increase the number of collection points in the area to make sure all unwanted phones are put back to good use. Recycle IT will typically pay between £1 and £10 for each phone depending on its condition. Terry was able to set up the business following guidance from Angela Langton at NYMAC who, through Bright Sparks, helped Terry to research and prepare a business plan, advised on the best ways to finance the business and still provides ongoing support and expertise to assist Terry in developing a successful business in the future. Bright Sparks is one of a number of business support services available to businesses in rural areas of North Yorkshire as part of the Objective 2 Business Support Programme. The programme is funded by Yorkshire Forward and the European Regional Development Fund, and is managed by Business Link York and North Yorkshire. Terry comments, "Setting up my own business was a daunting prospect but Angela helped me through it and offered invaluable advice along the way. I am currently working on increasing the number of recycling points across Scarborough to help people access them and have had a great response to the scheme so far. Angela is helping me out using her contacts with local businesses to find more outlets which I wouldn't have been able to do alone." Angela says, "Recycling is an extremely hot topic at the moment and Recycle IT is doing its bit in actively encouraging people to think more responsibly and reduce the amount of recyclable material which goes into our landfills. It is not only a great business idea but it is also putting something back into the community." For more information on how you can get involved visit www.mobilerecycle.co.uk |
